BIG STEM Communicators Network is looking for a self-employed contractor to join its small-but-perfectly-formed team of supporters of BIG’s aims and activities, to improve its service of training provision to members. You will develop and deliver BIG’s Skills Days and – over time – take over the coordination of the BIG Event too.
The contract is offered in 2 phases: partial contract Dec 2016 to Sep 2017 (value £1,500 ), and full contract from Sep 2017 (£5,000).
Phase 1 – partial contract: you will work alongside BIG’s Administrator and current BIG Event Coordinator to develop and deliver our one-day training events – Skills Days. Much of this work is already in place for 2016-17 so you will be getting up-to-speed with systems and processes, but also creating Skills Days yourself. Exact division of labour can be negotiated.
Phase 2 – full contract from Sep 2017: The Conference and Events Coordinator on full contract will plan and implement one annual conference and four Skills Days: responsibilities cover the annual BIG Event conference in July, the Little Event in January and three additional Skills Days at other times in the year. The Coordinator is the main point of contact for delegates, speakers and venue staff.
There is scope for annual renewal of the contract and expansion of the role. BIG does not have an office base, so you will be working from your own home/office with a network of volunteers and contractors across the UK.
The right candidate will have:
- A good understanding of and an interest in the UK STEM engagement field and BIG’s role
- Proven experience of planning, programming and implementation of similar events
- Excellent organisational, administrative and communication skills
- Ability to work with a high degree of independence
- A flexible and supportive attitude to needs of members and other BIG contractors and volunteers

BIG is the skills sharing network for individuals involved in the communication of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and associated disciplines. The group organises regular training events on issues relevant to science communication and informal science education. Members have access to news, discussion forums and events offering networking and sharing of information and views, as well as many other benefits.
BIG is a not-for-profit, unincorporated association managed by a voluntary Executive Committee of members, with the support of a part time Administrator and a Conference and Events Coordinator. Although based in the UK, membership is world-wide.
