Do you have experience communicating science and/or religion to public audiences? Do you write articles, produce videos or podcasts, or create other types of innovative media content?
The Science and Religion: Exploring the Spectrum (SRES) project is seeking media professionals to act as media fellows in residence as part of their research team at Newman University in Birmingham. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to produce creative media outputs while on placement with the team, with each fellow receiving a generous grant of up to £2,500. These funds can be used over a period of between 1 – 3 months.
About the project
SRES seeks to build an understanding of the social and cultural drivers behind the public’s perceptions of the relationship between science and religion, with a specific focus on evolutionary biology and religious belief. Surprisingly, although the relationship between science and religion is often talked about in the media, by public intellectuals, and in public spaces, very little empirical research has been done, which explores what people think about their own or others’ views on the relationship between science and religion, or by extension rationality, reason, and faith. This innovative and unique research project employs four intersecting approaches: social science field research; oral history, historical and media analysis; experimental social psychology; and a large-scale survey of public perceptions, attitudes and identity formation in the UK and Canada. Eligibility
Experience: The fellowship is open to applicants of varying levels of experience, from newcomers to the field to experienced communications or media professionals.
Media: All types of communications media will be considered, including but not limited to journalists writing for print, broadcast or online, YouTube video creators, animators, podcasters, radio producers, or artists in residence.
Location: We invite applications from communications and media professionals around the world; however the successful candidates will be expected to interact with our research team and attend our Research Centre at Newman University, Birmingham in person.

Fellowship dates: from 1-3 months between May – October 2017
Grant: Up to £2,500 each
