In 2017, Cheltenham Science Festival will be creating our first onsite makespace, the MakerShack, which will bring scientists, artists and makers together to inspire the public to explore the material world and discover the joy of making.
We are looking for looking for researchers working in astronomy and astrophysics who are curious about the material world, and exploring their research through making, to join us in the MakerShack, to help us develop and deliver a range of hands-on interactive activities for the general public. As part of this, we are offering free training in public engagement.
Apply to join us in the MakerShack at the Cheltenham Science Festival and share your expertise and passion with our audience. The Cheltenham Science Festival, with support from the Science & Technology Facilities Council, is offering 6 early career researchers from astronomy and astrophysics, a unique opportunity to develop and practice their engagement and communication skills at the Festival in June.
We will offer practical training in communication skills, focusing on the skills needed to engage with small groups through hands-on activities. Our experienced trainers will work with you to curate a drop-in, ‘making-focused station with links to your field of research, for both children and adults that you will run during the Festival. Alongside this fantastic opportunity, you will have the chance to attend events and network with world-class scientists and performers at one of the UK’s leading science festivals.
You must be over 21 and an early career researcher working in astronomy or astrophysics, based in the UK
You don’t need any experience of talking to the public, but we would like to see evidence that you’re interested in public engagement.
This is a week long training programme – you must be available from June 5th – 11th, with no other commitments.
We will provide shared accommodation and travel costs if required.
Apply here by completing this short application form.
Deadline: 5pm on 18th April.
We will email successful applicants between 21st – 25th April.
If you have any questions, please email Olivia Clemence.
