SMASHfestUK is an award-winning narrative-driven science/arts festival which aims to widen participation and increase diversity in STEM and the Arts. Each year we focus on a different natural disaster, featuring interactive installations, games, experiments, comedy and storytelling for all the family.
We’re back for 2018 as our new theme – FLOOD! – takes over The Albany Theatre and Deptford Lounge over half term 12 – 16 Feb in South East London.
This year we are tackling a topical and challenging subject – a climate change induced flood that submerges London. We’ll be exploring how to understand the phenomena, survive the event and rebuild society afterwards. SMASHfestUK is not an ordinary science festival – our strong storyline illuminates the power of STEAM (STEM and the Arts) to confront and resolve challenges through creativity, building science capital in the local community.
We are looking for passionate individuals to assist with activities at the festival. You don’t need to know loads about science or arts, just be interested in providing fun, free events accessible for all!
By taking part you’ll be volunteering alongside young people from our Young Explainers & Innovators programme, helping to inspire and guide them at the festival too. Our previous projects with young people have been recognised for their unique impact – including the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, The Engineer: Young Innovator – Engagement Initiative award, and NCCPE Public Engagement with Research in STEM Award. We hope you can join us for another inspiring year.
VOLUNTEERS
Whether you’re free all week or just for a few hours we want to hear from you! You’ll gain SMASHfestUK volunteer training, focusing on the local community and STEAM (STEM and the Arts) engagement.
Volunteers are provided with travel and food expenses, a free t-shirt, and the chance to work with a diverse range of artists, scientists and community groups.
SMASHfestUK is a small not-for-profit organisation which runs on a mix of paid science communication professionals, partnerships with local organisations and an inspiring community of volunteers to whom we’re extremely grateful. As a volunteer, if you have a particular interest that you’d like to pursue, let us know and we’ll try when it’s possible to meet this for your own personal development.
Visit smashfestuk.com/get-involved/ for more information and to complete our volunteer form. You can check out pictures from our previous festival on Flickr, and Facebook.
