STEM learning have three free online courses via FutureLearn coming up in the next few weeks which will enable you to develop your students’ learning with engaging and effective practical lessons:
Teaching practical chemistry: Explore how going beyond ‘recipe following’, teachers can use practical work in chemistry to support the explanation of theory. Discover ‘microscale’ experiments to allow more students to take an active role in their learning through practical work, and develop creative ways of teaching practical chemistry with approaches that are applicable to a range of situations including GCSE required practicals. Starts 19th February
Teaching practical biology: There are only so many ways a student can look at an onion cell, so how do we engage students with biology practicals? Develop creative ways of teaching practical biology with approaches that are applicable to a range of situations, including GCSE required practicals, and discuss the relationship between theoretical concepts and practical work. Starts 5th March
Teaching practical physics: This course explores the relationship between theoretical physics concepts and practical work, challenging you to think about what your students are learning through practical work. You will also develop creative ways of teaching practical physics with approaches that are applicable to a range of situations including GCSE required practicals. Topics covered include radiation, waves and electric circuits and contextualising practical work in physics to the everyday environment. Starts 12th March
